Gay Talese wrote “It's true what they say – all the good men are married. But it's marriage that makes them good.” This is absolutely true in my life. Any goodness I have in my life comes first from God making me more like his son and second from my wife Sara. We just had our 15th wedding anniversary and I am afraid to think of what I would be like if I had never met her. I look back on pictures of myself from the first few years of marriage and shake my head. I was so young and had so much to learn. I still have a long way to go but I am a very different person than I was then. I am a better person in many ways. I am in this career because of her, we are more successful financially because of her, my character has grown because of her, etc. She even found a typo in this blog for me before I posted it. In so many ways, my life is better because of her influence. As a matter of fact, even if she goes out of town for a few days I don’t take care of myself as well. I stay up way too late, eat junk food and watch violent movies. Research has shown this to be true as well. Married men are less likely to become alcoholic, commit suicide, they live longer than singles, are wealthier, have more friends, and are the happiest, most content people in the world. Like so many things, what we discover in research has been right in front of us all along in scripture. Proverbs 18:22 says “He who finds a wife finds what is good and receives favor from the Lord.” |
